Explaination of scientific name: The genus Putius means boat-shaped.
Original description: For the genus name the original description was found: Hamilton, 1822. Fish Ganges, pp 310-380. Distribution: Myanmar, through out the country. But they are found more abundant in Northern Shan State.
Habitat: Mountain streams with flowing, and crystal clear.
Characters: Body of the fish is deep and compressed. The head length is about 25% of standard length. Mouth is moderate and no barbels. Dorsal fin is inserted at the mid point of the tip of the snout and the base of caudal fin. The dorsal fin is yellow color with black stripes. There are two round black blotches, one is behind the gill cover and the other is at the base of peduncle. The scarlet red band, starting from just behind the gill cover to the base of caudal fin, along the flanks is quite distinct to be observed.
Sex differences: Male is more colorful, where as female has no attractive color.
Aquarium keeping: In order to keep and display with full beauty for these fish, one should keep them in well planted aquarium with diffuse light. The minimum tank size should be at least 100 cm, length. Species tank is more preferable.
Spawning: The fish can breed according to standard method for breeding barbs. The males and females should be separated at all times except when spawning. The tank should be 60 cm length and capacity is 40 liters. The fish are fed with Tubifex worm, and other live foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae and high quality flakes. Tri-meal feeding is better for brood stock. The tank size should be 90 x 30 x 30 cm, and water quality with pH 6.5 – 7.5 and conductivity 200 – 400 μS . At another end of the tank, plenty of fine leave aquatic plants or woolen mops are placed as spawning media, and other end should be bare space for mating for male and female. The well conditioned male and female are selected and placed in the tank, and wait for the complete spawning. The parents are removed after spawning. The eggs will hatch after 3 days and free swimming of fry will be seen after 7 days of spawning. The newly hatched brine shrimp can be chosen as the first food for the fry of this fish.
