Freshwater Fishes
The history of study of Myanmar inland water fish started in the year 1858 by E. Blyth. Later, Francis Day, N. Annandale, B. Prashad, D.D. Mukerjii, S.L. Hora,B.N. Chopra and other studied and identified Myanmar fish species and described them in different volumes of Records of the Indian Museum. Recently two ichthyologists from the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) namely Sven O. Kullander and Fang Fang Kullander and Carl J. Ferraris, Jr., of California Academy of Sciences, continued the studies of freshwater fishes of Myanmar. According to these fish scientists, the freshwater fish fauna of Myanmar is one of the least known in Southeast Asia. They estimated that there will be over 300 species of freshwater fish fauna in Myanmar, and most of them are apparently endemic. Maurice Kottelat, Case postal 57, Cornol, CH-2952, Switzerland, Tyson R, Robert, Research Associate, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Ralf Britz, Department of Zoology, The Natural History Museum, London, SW75 BD, United Kingdom, and Heok Hee Ng, Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore also have great interest identifying Myanmar fishes.
