Explanation: The generic name Akysis means lack of swim bladder. The specific name prashadi refers to the name of the Indian ichthyologist, B. Prashad.
Original description: Akysis variegatus variegatus Prashad & Mukerji 1929, Rec. Indian Mus., 31:180
Type specimen: Akysis variegatus variegatus
Type locality: Indawgyi Lake and streams roundabout Kamaing, Upper Burma.
Distribution: Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Northern Myanmar
Habitat: Fast flowing streams, hill streams with clear water and abundant oxygen. The bottoms of streams are covered by small pea gravel and sand.
Characters: The body of the fish is elongated, and compressed. Mouth is transverse; lower labial fold widely and interrupted in middle. It has four pairs of barbels. Dorsal fin inserted nearer to origin of adipose fin than to snout-tip. The caudal fin is emarginated. For the live specimen, the head color is grayish, speckled with irregular marking in front and behind the pelvic fins, and another black marking at the base of caudal fin. Some black patches are present on the fins. The maximum length is 62 mm standard length..
Sex differences: The male has small papilla at the vent.
Aquarium keeping: The fish is still and quiet, kept in community tank especially with small fishes. Live foods such as Tubifex worm, mosquito larvae can be fed.
