Botia kubotai Kottelat, 2004

Explanation of scientific name: The generic name Botia is the native name. The specific name kubotai is named after Katsuma Kubota, in appreciation for his help to get the type specimen and for the information for type locality.
Original description: Kottelat, M. (2007) Botia kubotai, a new species of loach (Teleostei: Cobitidae) from the Ataran River basin (Myanmar), with comments on botiine nomenclature and diagnosis of new genus. Zootaxa 401: 1 – 18 (2004)
Distribution: Ataran River basin, Myanmar
Habitat: Head water of small river with small pea gravel and sand bed.
Characters: Body is compressed. Ventral profile is straight through lower jaw to base of caudal fin. Dorsal profile a little concave from snout to dorsal fin, and then descending along dorsal fin base. There are four pairs of brbels. Caudal fin is deeply forked. For juvenile, basic body pattern made of three stripes and five bars. When the fish become adult, additional spots are distributed in all bands. Thus, the color of the body of the fish is black with more or less horizontal rows of yellow spots.
The maximum length of the fish ranges 80-90 mm total length.
Sex differences: It is hard to distinguish between male and female.
Aquarium keeping: The tank should be 100 cm minimum length. The tank can be either planted or rock decoration should be set up. The substrate should be very fine gravel or sand. Water chemistry is not critical. The fish can be fed either with live foods or flakes.
Spawning: No record for breeding.
