Explanation of scientific name: The generic name Yunnanilus means Yunnan, the center of distribution of genus, and the specific name brevis means short.

 

 

Original description: Boulenger, G. A. 1893. List f fishes collected by Mr. C. W. Oates in the southern Shan states and presented by him to the British Mseum. Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist.,(6) 12:198 – 203

 

Type specimen: Nemachilus brevis.

Type locality: Fort Stedman, S. Shan States, Burma:

 

 

Distribution: Inle Lake, He-Ho plain, and Lakes in Hopong Township.

 

 

Habitat: Some streams drained into Inle Lake. Most of the water body are occupied with dense vegetation. The pH is slightly alkaline, with the value, 7.2 – 7.8, and hard water.

 

 

Characters: The body of the fish is deep and compressed.  The depth of the body is increasing to dorsal fin origin, and then decreasing to caudal peduncle. The dorsal profile of caudal peduncle is horizontal. The caudal fin is emarginated. The color of the body of male as well as female is pale yellow. The males have black narrow band along the flank, and the females have black oval shape spots on the body. Fins are hyaline. The total lengths of males is 35 – 40 mm and for the females the total lengths range 40 – 60 mm.

 

 

Sex differences: The males have black band along the body and the females have spots distributed over the body.

 

 

Aquarium keeping: The tank size should be 100 x 30 x 35 cm. The fish is suitable for community tank and the best tank mates are small Danio species and Inlecypris auropurpurea.

 

 

Breeding: No record for captive breeding.
